Ο Πλάτων με την αλληγορία του σπηλαίου στην Πολιτεία του μάς πρότεινε μια ερμηνεία του πολιτικού φαινομένου και μας έδειξε ότι η κακοδιοίκηση και γενικότερα η κακοδαιμονία των (πόλεων)-κρατών οφείλεται στην απαιδευσία. Ο Πόε με το διήγημά του “Το σύστημα του δρος Πίσσα και του καθηγητή Φτερά”, δημοσιευμένο στα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα, μάς πρότεινε μια ερμηνεία της νοσούσης πολιτικής κοινωνίας ως ενός τρελοκομείου στο οποίο οι τρελοί παίρνουν την εξουσία και κλείνουν τους φύλακες και τους γιατρούς στα υπόγεια, εφαρμόζοντάς τους μάλιστα με ακόμη μεγαλύτερο ζήλο τις διαδεδομένες κατά τον 19ο αίωανα “επιστημονικές” μεθόδους θεραπείας της τρέλας (ψυχρολουσίες, απομόνωση, ηλεκτροσόκ). Το θέμα του διήγηματος του Πόε έδωσε την έμπνευση για την ταινία Stonehearst asylum, που κυκλοφόρησε στα 2014 και την οποία αξίζει να τη δει κανείς για να προβληματιστεί για το παράλογο που διέπει την πολιτική ζωή σε περιόδους κρίσης.

Ο διευθυντής του τρελοκομείου (ο τρελός ο οποίος ξεσήκωσε και τους άλλους τρελούς και πήραν την εξουσία) απευθύνεται στον νεαρό ιατρό ο οποίος διαπίστωσε ότι οι τρελοί μιλούν και φέρονται πολύ λογικά και του λέει:
“Είστε ακόμη νέος, φίλε μου”, αποκρίθηκε ο διευθυντής, αλλά θα ‘ρθει η μέρα που θα μάθετε να κρίνετε μόνος σας αυτά που συμβαίνουν στον κόσμο, χωρίς να εμπιστεύεστε στις φλυαρίες των άλλων. Μην πιστεύετε τίποτα απ΄ όσα ακούτε, και μόνο τα μισά απ’ όσα βλέπετε…”
“You are young yet, my friend,” replied my host, “but the time will arrive when you will learn to judge for yourself of what is going on in the world, without trusting to the gossip of others. Believe nothing you hear, and only one-half that you see.

“… Λόγου χάρη: δεν είναι πάρα πολύ καιρός [αφηγείται στον νεαρό γιατρό που αναφέραμε ο διευθυντής του Φρενοκομείου, τρελός κι ο ίδιος] που έτυχε ένα μοναδικό στο είδος του περιστατικό σ’ αυτό εδώ το ίδρυμα. Τότε, ξέρετε, βρισκόταν σε ισχύ το “καταπραϋντικό σύστημα” και οι τρελοί ήταν ελεύθεροι. Συμπεριφέρονταν εξαιρετικά καλά -και κάθε λογικός άνθρωπος θα μπορούσε να καταλάβει απ’ αυτό ακριβώς το γεγονός πως συμπεριφέρονταν εξαιρετικά καλά, πως κάποιο διαβολικό σχέδιο είχαν στο μυαλό τους. Και πράγματι, ένα πρωί, οι φύλακες βρέθηκαν δεμένοι χεροπόδαρα από τους ίδιους τους τρελούς, που τους έριξαν μέσα στα κελιά σαν να να ‘ταν εκείνοι οι τρελοί, κι ανέλαβαν αυτοί τα καθήκοντα του φύλακα”.
“Μη μου το λέτε! Δεν άκουσα ποτέ στη ζωή μου κάτι τόσο απίθανο!”
“Και όμως είναι γεγονός. Ολόκληρο το σχέδιο το σκαρφίστηκε κάποιος από τους τρελούς που του μπήκε η ιδέα πως είχε επινοήσει ένα καλύτερο σύστημα απ’ όλα τα γνωστά ως τότε, για να κυβερνά -για να κυβερνά τους τρελούς, εννοώ. Ήθελε να δοκιμάσει την επινόησή του, φαντάζομαι, κι έτσι έπεισε και τους άλλους τρελούς να πάρουν μέρος στη συνωμοσία για ν’ ανατρέψουν το καθεστώς”.
For example:- no very long while ago, a singular circumstance occurred in this very house. The ‘soothing system,’ you know, was then in operation, and the patients were at large. They behaved remarkably well-especially so, any one of sense might have known that some devilish scheme was brewing from that particular fact, that the fellows behaved so remarkably well. And, sure enough, one fine morning the keepers found themselves pinioned hand and foot, and thrown into the cells, where they were attended, as if they were the lunatics, by the lunatics themselves, who had usurped the offices of the keepers.”
“You don’t tell me so! I never heard of any thing so absurd in my life!”
“Fact- it all came to pass by means of a stupid fellow- a lunatic- who, by some means, had taken it into his head that he had invented a better system of government than any ever heard of before- of lunatic government, I mean. He wished to give his invention a trial, I suppose, and so he persuaded the rest of the patients to join him in a conspiracy for the overthrow of the reigning powers.”
